Strengthening Families 10-14
Because every family could use a little help.

“I listen to my parents more.”

“We used to scream and yell at each other and now we talk calmly.”

“My children are behaving more responsibly and helping with chores around the house.”

Addressing Underage Substance Use Before It Starts

“Treat a child as if he’s already the person he is capable of becoming.” – Haim Ginott

All parents worry about their children—and, unfortunately, substance use and addiction have become so common in our culture that children are exposed to them before we realize it’s happening. Weld County Prevention Partners, a program of North Range Behavioral Health, has long believed that a family with strong relationship and communication skills has a strong foundation to address this concern.

Weld County Prevention Partners Strengthening Families 10-14 Program is an evidence-based program for parents and youth that is effective in reducing long-term effects of substance use and misuse. The class helps families explore how they can improve their communication and allows both parents and youth to practice better skills through interactive activities. The skills learned help address teen substance use and other behavior problems, strengthen parent/youth relationships and communication, increase academic success, and prevent violence and aggressive behavior at home and at school.

Developed by Iowa State University, it engages families and communities in building five areas called “protective factors.” Known to help families navigate challenging situations, these attributes include:

  • Parental resilience
  • Social connections
  • Knowledge of parenting and child development
  • Concrete support in times of need
  • Social and emotional competence of children

The seven two-hour sessions, provided in either Spanish or English, are led by two certified facilitators, with separate sessions for youth and parents and then families together. Childcare for younger siblings is provided. After completing the seven sessions, families are also offered four optional booster sessions.

Every family can benefit from these classes, no matter their challenges and habits. Families involved in the program give high marks for the positive changes they’ve seen. As one youth who attended the class with his mother says, “”They taught you to deal with your own stuff. It taught you to put limits on yourself.”

And it’s not just families that benefit – our communities do too. As research proves, for every dollar spent on this class, $9.60 comes back to the community as benefits in the form of less jail time, less time off, and less time in treatment.
