Third Annual Essay Contest Winner Announced

For the third year in a row Responsible Alcohol Retailers of Weld County sponsored an essay contest with a $500 scholarship prize. Graduating seniors were invited to submit a 500-word essay about underage drinking and a letter of reference. This year’s winner is Weld Central High School Graduate Kaitlyn Becker.

“We received 17 exceptional entries this year,” said RARWC Spokesperson and Westlake Wine & Spirits Owner Jim Radcliffe. “Our membership was so impressed by the quality of essays submitted. It was hard to choose!”

Becker heard about the essay contest through her high school counselor. “She’s always looking for scholarship opportunities for students. When I heard about this one, I was excited,” Becker said. “I’ve been taking a social psychology course and learning about addictions and thought the contest would be a good way to use the information I learned and maybe make a difference.”

Becker will be attending Colorado School of Mines in the fall and studying chemical engineering.

“Every year, alcohol contributes to the deaths of 4,300 youth under age 21 each year, which is such a tragic loss. By age 18, 65% of teens have consumed at least one alcoholic beverage. Our organization is dedicated to preventing access to alcohol to anyone under age 21. This scholarship supports our mission to help educate the community about the dangers of underage drinking,” said Radcliffe.

Weld County Prevention Partners supports RARWC, which is a program of North Range Behavioral Health. It is a coalition of on premise and off premise alcohol retailers, law enforcement, government, community members and other interested business partners. The organization is dedicated to reducing the use of alcohol in our community and preventing underage drinking through responsible business practices and networking.
