Be a Positive Role Model
Young people learn best from example. The trouble is, they don’t know a good example from a bad one. That’s why it’s so important for you and the other adults in their lives to be good role models.
If we lose out temper every time we drive, we’re sending a message. If we drink enough alcohol or use enough marijuana to be visibly impaired, they see that behavior and think, “that must be ok.” If we always drink to excess, or play drinking games, kids think that’s normal behavior.
You can role model in many areas: being kind to strangers and animals. Admitting when you are wrong. Keeping your promises. Being on time. If we take the time to do the right thing as much as possible, our kids will learn what the right thing is.
Yes, it’s important to have conversations with your kids about important issues. But the old saying IS true: actions speak louder than words.
